– Ghost Elephants of Lisima –

In the remote highlands of eastern Angola, elders speak of elephants that move quietly through the Miombo forests. For the communities collectively known as the Kangala, these elephants are not simply wildlife—they are ancestors, part of a worldview in which people, animals, rivers, and forests form a single living system.

The landscape, now referred to as Lisima—“the source of life”—lies within the headwaters of the Okavango Basin. From these sandy soils and crystal-clear rivers, water flows south to sustain ecosystems and communities across Angola, Namibia, and Botswana. For generations, traditional leadership and spiritual beliefs have shaped how people live with this landscape, maintaining a balance that has allowed both elephants and people to endure.

Here, the presence of elephants reflects the health of the land itself—reminding us that conservation is not always something created, but something that has long existed. ̌
