Following Romania's communist era, where industrialization dominated, land redistribution shifted rural communities back to agriculture and timber, driving economic dependency on natural resources. Now, Romania faces a choice: continue resource exploitation or pioneer a sustainable economy. With some of Europe’s richest biodiversity in the Carpathians, including species like wolves, bears, and lynxes, rewilding could preserve these ecosystems—but communities economically tied to the land are concerned about their future. As these communties come together to address these challenges, Romania has the potential to set a powerful conservation precedent for Europe. ̌
